AI Visibility describes whether and how a brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. It’s not just about being mentioned, but about how a brand is represented: with what sentiment, compared to which competitors, and based on which sources. While classic SEO has been established for years, visibility in AI answers is still completely uncharted territory for most companies — even though a growing share of purchase decisions already start there.
Why this topic matters now
AI search is growing alongside classic search — not instead of it. Whoever optimizes only for Google leaves a growing share of demand unobserved. People increasingly ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly for recommendations, comparisons, and solutions instead of clicking through ten blue links. For brands, this means there’s a new channel through which purchase decisions get influenced — and most simply don’t know what’s being said about them there.
On top of that: AI answers work by different rules than Google rankings. A page that’s ranked #1 for years still won’t automatically show up in a ChatGPT answer — because AI systems prefer different sources, cite differently, and weight content differently. Existing SEO investment doesn’t automatically pay into AI visibility.
Especially for products and services that need explaining — B2B software, consulting, complex purchase decisions — people increasingly use AI chats as a first research step, even before the classic comparison of several provider websites. Whoever doesn’t show up in this first step loses visibility at a point in the purchase decision where classic SEO no longer applies at all, because the search no longer runs through a results list.
The four questions AI Visibility answers
A clean AI visibility check clarifies four things:
Prompt volume
What are people in your category actually asking AI systems — and are you aligning your content to that, or to wishlist keywords?
Answer insights
How do ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini represent your brand in real answers, including sentiment and framing?
Citation tracking
Which sources do AI systems cite when talking about your category — and is your website among them?
Score trend
How does your visibility develop over time, compared to your competitors?
How AI Visibility is measured
At anyway, we work with a fixed model for this, the anyway Framework: Prompt Universe, Brand Presence, Brand Framing, Competitive Context, and Source Influence. Each dimension is captured individually — via real prompts, in incognito sessions, documented with screenshots. From the raw data, an AI Visibility Score emerges that shows where a brand currently stands and where the biggest gaps are. That’s exactly what the AI Visibility Audit delivers.
Important: a single measurement says little. AI answers fluctuate from session to session, depending on time of day, user context, and small differences in prompt wording. Only the trend over several weeks shows whether a brand’s visibility is actually improving or declining — which is why we always work with repeated measurements rather than single samples.
How do the individual AI platforms tick?
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini work differently on a technical level, and that has direct consequences for AI Visibility:
ChatGPT relies on a combination of training data, the Bing search index, and retrieval mechanisms (RAG) when a query requires current information. If a brand is poorly represented in the Bing index, ChatGPT generally won’t find it either. Perplexity, by contrast, crawls live and shows transparent source links directly in the answer — the only one of the three channels where referral traffic can be tracked directly in analytics tools. Gemini, in turn, is closely tied to the Google Knowledge Graph and thus follows a different logic than classic Google ranking or ChatGPT.
In practice, this means a brand can be highly visible on one platform and completely absent on another — without that having anything to do with the brand’s quality, simply different data sources and update cycles.
What AI Visibility is not
A few misconceptions persist. AI Visibility is not the same as a single positive mention in a test prompt — one-off hits say little about actual, recurring visibility. It also does not come automatically from good classic SEO, because AI systems weight and cite sources differently than Google. And it can’t be forced through keyword stuffing or aggressive link-building tactics — AI systems tend to reward clarity, consistency, and citability over pure optimization signals.
A practical example
If you ask an AI something like “Which agency helps B2B companies with AI visibility?”, the result is often sobering: your own brand doesn’t show up, while three competitors get named — usually because their content is more clearly structured or cited more often by third-party sources. That’s not random; it follows traceable patterns that can be deliberately worked on, for example as part of a Sharp Positioning project.
Whoever doesn’t know if and how AI talks about their own brand can’t steer it either.
What this means for your brand
AI Visibility doesn’t replace existing SEO — it adds a new layer of visibility with its own rules: clear direct answers, structured data, citable sources, and consistent positioning. The first step is always the same: measure before you optimize. Exactly how this new layer of visibility — GEO — differs from classic SEO is shown in the article GEO vs. SEO: What’s Changing. Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between AI Visibility and classic SEO?
Classic SEO optimizes for rankings in Google search. AI Visibility measures and optimizes whether and how a brand appears in the answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Both complement each other — AI Visibility doesn’t replace SEO.
How is AI Visibility measured?
Through a set of real buyer questions (prompts) that are systematically tested across multiple AI platforms. What’s captured: brand mentions, position in the answer, sentiment, competitors named, and cited sources.
Does every brand need an AI Visibility Audit?
It’s especially relevant for brands whose target audience researches purchase decisions before buying (B2B, products/services that need explaining), and for brands that don’t yet have any data on how AI systems represent them in their category.
How long does it take for AI Visibility to improve?
Individual prompt answers fluctuate day to day. Reliable trends show up over 30 to 60 days, not from a single measurement.
